OVERVIEW

The majority of the nation’s population resides in Ontario, which will be easy to see why once you visit. After you land in Toronto, a lakeside metropolis of glass skyscrapers and the soaring CN Tower, feel the thrill of the falls in Niagara and sip on the region’s sweet wines. Head further north to the fresh air of the Muskokas—a collection of freshwater lakes, quaint villages and a slew of cottages and cabins. Get more of the great outdoors in the Algonquin Provincial Park and hop in a canoe for a paddle or hit the trails by bike or foot. In Collingwood, sample the province’s freshest cider and wander mossy caves. The real showstopper comes last, with a visit to the Bruce Peninsula and its spectacularly blue shores.

The Itinerary

Known as Canada’s economic core and largest city, Toronto gives you the kind of buzz that only a big city can. If you can dream it, you can find it here. Want to spend the day on the beach? Hop in a water taxi and head to the island for a day on its sandy shores with incredible views of the skyline. Craving nature? The Evergreen Brickworks offers a leafy respite within the city or head a bit further east to the Scarborough Bluffs for a trek along clay cliffs lining the waters of Lake Ontario. Depending on the season, sports fans can hit up a game (NBA, NHL or MLB—take your pick), art lovers should stop by the AGO and the ROM, and food-and-drink enthusiasts can indulge their senses through Kensington Market or St. Lawrence Market—voted by National Geographic as the best market in the world!

Niagara is home to both a natural wonder of the world and is Canada’s top wine region—all just two hours from Toronto’s downtown core. The booming Niagara Falls, known on the Canadian side as the Horseshoe Falls, is truly a magnificent sight, which you can experience up close on a cruise through its misty offshoots. The nearby region of Niagara-on-the-Lake offers a calmer side of things with a charming old town and elevated restaurants, where you can sample some of the region’s top vintages (in particular, don’t miss trying Ice Wine—a Niagara specialty!).

Welcome to Ontario’s official “cottage country.” The Muskoka Lakes, better known as just Muskoka, encompasses three large bodies of fresh water—Rosseau, Joseph and Muskoka—and the dense forests and luxury chalets that surround them. These calm and pristine lakes are well-suited for water sports like waterskiing and wakeboarding. The less adventurous can hang back on the deck and relax in one of the area’s signature chairs, suitably dubbed a ‘Muskoka chair,’ and take in the views.

Algonquin Provincial Park is Ontario’s most popular reserve, combining beautiful lakes, rivers, and unspoiled wilderness teeming with wildlife. Choose your challenge on terrain that ranges from flat trails along boardwalks to more difficult routes that climb over ridges, rewarding you with views of a seemingly endless forest range. Prepare for sightings like beaver or moose (best seen in spring) and the other critters that call the park home. During fall months, stunning colours sweep across the landscape, dressing it in fiery hues. After a lovely lakeside lunch, opt for hopping in a canoe, biking on one of the forested trails or visiting the Algonquin Art Centre.

The lakeside town of Collingwood is the heart of the Blue Mountains—the name of peaks that blanket this corner of southwestern Ontario. Blue Mountain is also the name of its nearby resort hub, where you’ll find a buzzing pedestrian village with lively pubs and restaurants. During winter, the area is well-loved for skiing, while in the summer, its scenic caves and the Craigleith Provincial Park appeal to hikers and campers. Thanks to the lake and fertile soil from the Niagara Escarpment, the region is known for growing some of the tastiest apples around, which you can savour in the form of local craft cider or fresh-baked apple pies.

One of Ontario’s most mesmerizing landscapes is the Bruce Peninsula National Park. The Bruce Trail straddles a vast forested ridge that runs across southern Ontario, connecting the Niagara River with Georgian Bay. Its location along the Niagara Escarpment makes for impressive rock formations spattered along the trails. Take on a 5 km trail and hike towards the Grotto—a limestone cave overlooking Georgian Bay’s clear blue water. Wind up in Tobermory in time for lunch, whose turquoise shores could have you convinced you’re gazing out at the Mediterranean Sea.
